Define the problem before the feature list

Describe the person who will use the application and the task they need to complete. Explain what is difficult about their current method and why an app might be a better fit. A sentence about the user problem is more useful at this stage than a long list of screens.

Check whether a responsive website, web application or existing tool could solve the problem. A mobile app may be appropriate for frequent use or device capabilities, but installation and ongoing operating-system support add responsibilities. The right choice depends on the workflow.

Scope one complete useful journey

Map the essential steps from starting the app to completing the primary task. Include sign-in only where it is needed. Think about error states, interrupted sessions and what users see when there is no information available. These details belong in the scope, not in a later cosmetic pass.

Separate mandatory requirements from optional ideas. Security, privacy and operational needs do not disappear because the release is an MVP. Features that do not support the first useful journey can be kept in a roadmap until feedback provides a reason to prioritise them.

Choose platforms through requirements

Compare iOS, Android and a cross-platform approach against the actual features. Consider device permissions, notifications, offline behaviour, payments and integrations. Code sharing can reduce duplication in some projects, but it does not remove the need to test both mobile platforms.

Discuss the development and maintenance implications together. Ask which dependencies are required, how platform updates are handled and who controls release accounts. Store review requirements are set by the platforms, so submission should not be described as guaranteed approval.

Define what the first release should teach you

Agree what evidence will help the next decision. That might include whether users complete the core task, where they stop or which requests recur. Analytics can support the review, but interviews and operational feedback can reveal issues numbers alone miss.

Prepare a brief with the target audience, core journey, existing systems and constraints. Our MVP development and app UI/UX services explain how scope and prototypes can support those decisions. A smaller release is useful when it creates a clearer opportunity to learn.
