Start with a representative customer visit
A website can feel fast on an office connection and less usable on a mobile device. Test important pages such as services, products and contact, not just the homepage. Check whether visitors can understand the page and start the main task while other resources are loading.
Separate a one-off lab test from field information collected from actual visits. A test can identify opportunities, but its conditions may not represent every user. Use several signals and record the device and connection conditions before comparing results.
Make images appropriate for their frame
Large photographs are often delivered at dimensions far beyond the space they occupy. Responsive image versions help the browser request a suitable size. Modern formats can reduce file size, but visual quality still needs to be checked against the image’s purpose.
Give images stable dimensions so content does not jump as they appear. Below-the-fold images can usually load later, while the primary visible image needs different prioritisation. Lazy-loading every image without considering its position can delay the content visitors need first.
Review fonts and third-party scripts
Fonts, analytics tags, chat widgets and advertising tools all add requests or processing. Ask which scripts are actually required and whether they need to run immediately. Remove unused tools rather than adding another optimisation layer around them.
Use only the font weights the design needs and plan a readable fallback while the font loads. Animations should not hide important content if a deferred effect fails. Check the page with reduced motion and on touch devices as part of the review.
Connect speed work with the website scope
Performance improvements should be prioritised alongside usability and content. A fast page still needs a clear offer, usable navigation and working forms. Identify the templates and resources responsible for repeated issues so a fix helps more than one page.
Discuss a website review before assuming a rebuild is necessary. Our website maintenance and redesign services can help define the work required. No single optimisation guarantees a particular score or commercial result; measurements need to be checked after implementation.
