Start with the jobs your website must do

Before comparing platforms, list the tasks your customers and staff need to complete. A service business may need visitors to understand an offer and send an enquiry. An online retailer also needs product management, checkout and order handling. A customer portal may require accounts and specialist workflows. These are different briefs, even if the sites initially look similar.

Write down who will update the content, how often it changes and which information needs approval. Consider your existing CRM, booking system, product catalogue or internal tools. Separate essential requirements from preferences so the decision is not dominated by a demonstration of features you will not use.

Compare platform categories, not just templates

Hosted builders can suit teams that want managed infrastructure and straightforward publishing. WordPress provides a broad content ecosystem, while Shopify is designed around commerce. A custom web application may be appropriate when the business workflow needs specific interfaces, permissions or integrations. None of these options is automatically right for every business.

Compare the editing experience, available integrations, accessibility of the chosen design and the support required. Check which features are native and which depend on paid extensions or custom development. A platform that suits a brochure website may not suit a complex catalogue or portal.

Understand ownership and ongoing costs

The initial build is only part of the decision. Ask about hosting, subscriptions, extensions, payment-provider costs and routine maintenance. Confirm who controls the domain, accounts and content, and whether information can be exported if the business changes platforms later.

For a UK online shop, document the currency, delivery and tax information your business needs to provide. Confirm supported workflows with the relevant providers rather than assuming every platform configuration meets your requirements. Legal and tax decisions need appropriate advice, not a promise from a website template.

Prepare a useful platform brief

Bring a page list, essential workflows, existing systems and content responsibilities to the first discussion. Explain which parts of the current website are working and which create friction. Ask the development partner to explain the trade-offs in plain language and identify assumptions that need testing.

Read our web development service overview for the different project types. If you already have a website, discuss focused improvements or a redesign before deciding to replace it. The useful outcome is an appropriate scope, not the most fashionable technology.
